Past Interns and Fellows

AmishaAmisha Patel, came to ReThink with three years of experience working in strategic communications and public policy at various non-profits. She was most recently the Media and Communications Coordinator at the Partnership for Global Security. Amisha holds bachelor's degrees in Political Science and Communications from the University of California, San Diego. She will pursue an MA in Security Studies from the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University this fall.

 

Daniel MingDaniel Ming interned with ReThink in the fall of 2010, after graduating from Vassar College with a degree in Peace and Conflict Studies. He has experience blogging and working in Israel and the Palestinian Territories. After completing his internship, Dan moved to Washington DC, where he now works as an Assistant Producer for Al Jazeera's social media show "The Stream."

 

Alicia FreeseAlicia Freese graduated Cum Laude from Pomona College with a BA in international relations. After interning with ReThink during the summer of 2010, she returns to the team as a Media Associate. Her previous work experience, ranging from researching the state of HIV/AIDS care in refugees camps to assisting a publishing firm with its social media marketing efforts, has fostered a strong interest in both media analysis and issues that lie at the intersection of foreign policy and the rule of law.

 

Caroline LewisCaroline Lewis recently graduated from Oberlin College, where she studied Sociology and Politics. Though always interested in journalism and media studies, she became passionate about community media while studying abroad in Chile in Fall 2008. Back in the US, she has pursued this passion by reporting for WBAI Evening News in her hometown, New York City; helping to launch the News Corps at WOBC, Oberlin's college and community radio station; and starting Gathering Hope House Radio, a program that gives a voice to members of a mental health recovery center in Lorain, OH. Caroline will return to Chile in March 2011 as a Fulbright Research Fellow.

 

Leah SivieriLeah Sivieri graduated from McGill University in Montreal, Canada with a degree in English Cultural Studies, International Relations, and East Asian History. She has studied abroad in France, Singapore and Sweden and is primarily interested in intercultural communications and their impact on foreign affairs. She interned as a reporter for a small community newspaper in New Jersey and as an Editorial Assistant for McGill's Department of Development and Communications before coming to Rethink Media during the summer of 2010. She now works as a Communications Assistant for the Cooper Foundation of Cooper University Hospital in Camden, NJ, and is helping the Foundation update and execute its web-based communications strategies.

 

Dana LiebelsonDana Liebelson is an undergraduate at George Washington University, graduating this spring with a degree in International Affairs and Asian Studies. She is interested in both foreign affairs and journalism, and has written for the global magazine, Diplomatic Courier, the Washington City Paper, and for Cafe Abroad Magazine while studying in Melbourne, Australia. While in the District, she also interned for the non-profit organization, the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press. Her interests include human rights, women's rights and national security issues--particularly in Asia--and she spent last summer studying Mandarin in Harbin, China.

 

Melanie ButlerMelanie Butler recently earned an MA in Political Science at the University of British Columbia, Canada. A version of her Master’s thesis was published in the June 2009 issue of the Cambridge Review of International Affairs. Melanie has acted as a representative to the Canadian Peace Alliance, Canada's largest umbrella peace organization, and has helped found several student groups and educational initiatives dedicated to peace advocacy and gender equality in Canada. She is a regular volunteer at the Homeless Garden Project in Santa Cruz, California, where she also works part time for the NPR member station KUSP.

 

Louisa Butler has worked on new media communications projects for progressive nonprofits in the U.S. and abroad. Since graduating from Georgetown University, Louisa spent time in Cape Town, South Africa developing innovative multimedia for a national HIV/AIDS advocacy organization. While there, she also teamed up with community activists to create print and web materials for a grassroots campaign to educate local low-income communities about unjust water cutoffs and the privatization of other services. Louisa is currently studying multimedia and web development at San Francisco State University. 

 

CharitaCharita Law, originally from Southern California, is studying Sociology and Mass Communications at UC Berkeley. Before coming to ReThink Media, she was a research assistant for UC Berkeley's Jurisprudence and Social Policy (JSP) Program where she worked on a media audit of public interest law firms. She also worked on projects for the UC Berkeley Survey Research Center regarding water quality at public beaches and prenatal care for Californian women. She plans to study communications and public policy at the University of Hong Kong next fall.

 

 

Maggie Karoff has just arrived on the west coast--arriving from Boston-- to finish her undergraduate degree. Before landing at ReThink Media, she worked during the campaign season as a photographer and videographer for a traveling environmental education and advocacy organization. A transfer from NYU, she is currently taking a year off before returning to finish a degree this fall in Media and Environmental studies.
